I run motul oils exclusively and buy them by the case. Within the confines of that garden I couldn't care less what Motul markets or what their product differentiation happens to be. After that who cares where it comes from or whether it is boutique or thoroughly Walmart. What individuals ("most guys") should do is pick an appropriately rated oil (specifications, approvals or licenses) within a recommended grade, and a winter rating that is appropriate for the expected starting conditions. X-Clean EFE carries MB 229.52, X-clean 5W30 carries MB229.51. No, they do not have BMW based on "issues." BMW has specific requirements and they formulate oil based on that and then they have to obtain approval from BMW. On top of that, hundreds of thousands of cars require these approvals. There is life outside Walmart, and I buy my oils, for the most part in Walmart. Well, I am writing from the USA, and no it is not boutique oil. They wouldnt care about high saps or low saps or any of that. Here in the USA most guys would grab Mobil 1 5W30 and be done. They have exacting products for certain situations. Its not the $22 for 5 quarts deal at Walmart. Or why have the Xclean and Xclean EFE? The Xlcean is slightly thinner otherwise both seem the same. How is the specific oil formulated for BMW? Are there exacting specifications or is Motul formulating it based on known issues? I wonder to myself why have a specific oil? Some of the other oils in the lineup can go into the BMW. In addition, it is very good oil that has all necessary approvals for category they target their product. I am not sure are they still sponsoring Subaru in WRC but if they do, that is probably one of the longest sponsorship relationships. Im not planning on using Motul but just browsing and looking.

Please feel free to add more information. Xcess has higher saps and TBN whereas Xclean lower saps and TBN. Targeted for fuel economy minded customers.ĮcoEnergy Mid to High Saps. Specific- It says specifically designed for BMW.ĮcoClean+ Lowsaps. Maybe they could go with just EFE versus 2 products here. Not certain why they have Xclean EFE and Xclean+. X-Clean+ Midsaps Has some European OEM approvals. Basically this is the thickest possible 5W30 out there. X-Clean EFE Midsaps Has some European OEM approvals. Looks like the audience for this oil is USA. If you truly want to stay within OEM spec this might be the oil to look at. From reviewing their website for 5W30 here is what I see.Įco-Lite- MidSaps Has some OEM approvals. I know its boutique and in this case "designer" oil.

This is why oils like 0w20/30/40 both have good VI and are composed of real synthetic base stocks (because they have to be to meet the 0w20/30/40 numbers).Ĭrap I thought more reading would clear this up and I would just move to X-clean EFE.now I am more conflicted than ever.Help me understand the Motul Oil line. I definitely do much less spirited driving and less longer drives in the winter.well with the exception of the occasional hoon in fresh snow (ice covered by 6 inches of snow last weekend baby)Īccording to my recent reading, the better low temp viscosity and higher VI usually indicate real synthetic (maybe better) base stocks in comparison to some (most) 5w30 "Synthetics" that are ultra refined dino-oil-stocks. I wonder if my car ever really reaches normal operating temps for the oil (I don't have an oil temp guage) during these drives.īut I am sacrificing normal op temp viscosity to stay with the Sustina.and I think (THINK-who really knows) we can all agree that the EJ257 could use a thicker oil at operating temp. In the winter most of my driving is cold start (in garage) - 5.5 miles - cold start (in parking lot at work) - 5.5 miles home. So now I wonder if by going to EFE I am sacrificing startup/cold operating protection. one that is closer to the desired operating temp value) will protect better at cold temps than the lower VI oil because it flows better (more like normal) through the passages. It means that an oil with a better/lower 40C viscosity (i.e. The desired 30 wt (the 30 in 5w30) viscosity at operating temp is between 9.3 and 12.5.Ī higher viscosity index (VI) is better because it means that at low temps the oil is closer to the desired running viscosity. X-clean EFE 5w30 40C viscosity = 70.1 100C viscosity = 12.1 viscosity index = 169 HTHS = 3.5

I am currently using (but considering going away from to X-clean EFE)Įneos Sustina 5w30 40C viscosity = 51.5 100C viscosity = 10.3 viscosity index = 194 HTHS = 3.1 Viscosity that is ~25% higher than other oils with an HTHS ~3.0-3.1. One thing that I have noticed is that while the X-clean EFE is a HTHS 3.5 oil it also has a cold
